SUNY Cortland hosts piano-violin recital

Lois Pfister, violinist, and Marina Gorelaya, pianist, will present a recital at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Brockway Hall on the SUNY Cortland campus. The program consists of exciting and diverse compositions from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The recital is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

Featured on the program is Ms. Gorelayašs arrangement for violin and piano of Claude Debussy's charming Suite Bergamasque, originally written for solo piano. The Suite includes Prelude, Menuet, the ever-popular Clair de Lune, and Passepied.

Other compositions include two works by Manuel de Falla, Danse Espangnole from the opera, La vida breve, and Suite populaire Espagnole, Antonin Dvorak's Romance in f minor, and movements III and IV from Cesar Franck's monumental Sonata for violin and piano.

Ms. Pfister teaches at SUNY Cortland in the Department of Performing Arts and is an active performer in regional orchestras and chamber ensembles. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Ithaca College and a Master of Music Performance degree from The Pennsylvania State University. She has recently performed at the Cortland at the Arts and Wine Festival, the Main Street Luncheon Music Series and the Cortland Donor's Appreciation Dinner.

Ms. Gorelaya, a native of the Ukraine, is well-know and admired in the region as an accomplished pianist. She appears regularly as soloist and accompanying artist in recitals with vocal and instrumental colleagues and students, and is currently rehearsal pianist for the Syracuse University School of Ballet. She earned her doctoral degree at Kiev University in the Ukraine. Ms. Gorelaya has made her home in Homer for the past 11 years.
